Stupid Signs to keep Society Straight!
Do we have too many pointless signs?
We have some really stupid social rules! We stick to them like discarded chewing gum sticks to our shoes and we’re aghast when someone breaks these rules.
This morning I was writing (my last Medium piece Are Overthinkers Attracted to Underthinkers) in the local library. I like writing in the library, it’s warm and comfortable with people around, but not too many to be noisy. I don’t need to buy a drink or worry about how long I’ve been sat there. I had been sat still, writing for about 3 hours. It was lunchtime and I had finished my piece so I decided to go for a walk and find a nice bench to eat my lunch. Once I stood up, I realised how cold I was. I had been sat still for too long, my blood hadn’t been moving about much. If I were at home I would jump up and down a few times. That warms me up quite quickly. But something in my psyche suggested that I shouldn't do star jumps in the library. I can’t quite see why not. 10 jumps aren’t going to bother anyone. It wouldn’t be noisy and it would be a lot less distracting than the IT Support group that has been using the library. But I still didn't feel that I could. I walked quite fast up and down the high street instead.
