Patreon — Should I Use It?

Should writers use Patreon? Should we support creators on Patreon? What is Patreon?!

Have you heard of Patreon?

The people I know seem to be broadly split into three groups. Two groups are about even, group three is much smaller. Roughly 45%, 45% and 10%, for the mathematical amongst you.

Group one (45%) has never heard of Patreon, or have but have no idea what it is.
Group two (45%) has heard of Patreon but object to paying for it.
Group three (10%) support someone (or some people) on Patreon.

What is Patreon?

Patreon describes itself as a

membership platform that makes it easy for creators to get paid.

Patrons pay a certain amount every month to the creator. Creators can be writers (you guessed that, right?), YouTubers, artists, musicians, podcasters…almost anything creative.

Patrons (or supporters) pledge to pay the creator a certain amount each month.
Pledges start from $1 — that’s $12 per year.
