Does Professional Writing Damage Your Leisure Time?
Does writing destroy your work-life balance?
It’s important to relax. Take time out. Take a break. Chill. Have downtime.
In my downtime, I love to dance. I also enjoy walking and watching films.
One of my favourite pastimes is reading. I love reading — particularly fiction. Any type of fiction, any genre, any author. It whisks me away to another world where I can forget about the washing up, the latest article I am writing or the marketing that needs doing.
But being a writer can make it difficult to define and use my leisure time.
Omnipresent
Writing can feel omnipresent. It’s always there. My brain rarely stops working on something I could write. That’s okay — but I have to write the ideas down or I forget them. Writing the ideas down is work. I can't stop in the middle of a dance and jot down an idea — my dance partner would be horrified!
The tools of my work are always there. My Chromebook (a small laptop type thing) is always about. If I watch TV on my own, I watch it on my Chromebook. Which is where I write my stories and articles…you get the picture?
